Can a photo change the world?

Photo that greatly affected my life

Taken by Matthew Garrity

This is a picture I think dramatically altered my life, not because I took it obviously but because what happened this day marked a start in my ability to play college golf and get recruited. For context my whole life I struggled heavily with the problem of the mental game and golf, shooting the scores I should've been and not the ones I had been. This picture captured what I had to look at during the last day of a 2 day tournament that I had played very well in up to this point, only had 2 more holes left and needed to drop 3 shots to win. If I went into the water or the woods right it was over and I had no chance, which on this tee shot has taken the most shots all weekend from players as it was the highest scoring and hardest rated hole. I was definitely nervous to hit the tee shot and I needed eagle to have a chance so it meant I have to hit driver to give myself any chance, also the hardest club to hit in the bag and I just hit it poorly on the hole prior so confidence wasn't that high to be honest. I pulled the driver out anyway and made sure to fall back onto my basics and I kept positive reaffirmations in my head, focused only on my target and swung. Near perfect and I ended up getting a birdie which ended up really working because the leader put it in the water off the tee and made bogey. I went on to tie him on 18 then we went into a playoff and I won my first 2 day golf tournament which is so important to me and helped my career so much.

Bob Adelman: From Civil Rights to Making a Difference - The New York Times

Taken by Bob Adelman

On the topic of pictures changing the world, I feel that this is a perfect example of a picture that changed the world. The civil rights movement is arguably one of the most important points in modern history, here we have a picture of the most influential speech of that time. Martin Luther King speaking to the American people in Washington DC, telling them his "I have a dream" moment. I think this could go onto to one of the best pictures in the history of the United States. More pictures taken by Adelman this day also show the other side of Mr. King, the enormous crowd that had been drawn by his dialogue. I feel this was before a time where the media was mass controlled and corrupted. This was international headlines and seen marvelous all over the globe, unlike now how different areas in the world, different messages are conveyed (See M3 section 2). These pictures of the crowd could've severely swayed the populous opinion. The American people seeing the huge crowd with all types of people with different backgrounds could've helped out so much. Like the time president Boris Yeltsin won the election (see M3 section 1, YT Boris Yeltsin dancing 0:39).
